About

This tool is designed for civil engineers and steel fabricators to verify if a specific steel profile can withstand a defined bending moment. Unlike basic calculators, it integrates material property checks (Yield Strength) to provide an immediate pass/fail indication based on the Elastic Section Modulus.

Input the profile dimensions and the applied bending moment to calculate the maximum normal stress at the extreme fibers. The tool automatically compares this stress against standard steel grades (ASTM A36, A992, or European S275, S355).

Formulas

Maximum Bending Stress (σmax) occurs at the furthest point from the neutral axis:

σmax = MSmin

Safety Check:

{
SAFE if σmax FyFAIL if σmax > Fy

Reference Data

GradeYield Strength (Fy)Use Case
ASTM A36250 MPa (36 ksi)Standard channels, angles, plates.
ASTM A992345 MPa (50 ksi)Standard wide-flange W-beams.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. This tool calculates raw stress vs yield strength. Engineers must manually apply LRFD or ASD safety factors to the Moment or the Yield Strength limit.
The axis where the stress is zero during bending. For symmetrical I-beams, it is at mid-height.
