When reinforcing concrete slabs, driveways, or floors, the primary material challenge is determining how many standard sheets or rolls are needed to cover a specific area while accounting for overlaps. Simply dividing the total area by the sheet size leads to material shortages, as structural integrity requires sheets to overlap by at least one grid square (typically 200mm to 300mm).

This calculator solves the 'effective area' problem. By inputting your specific overlap requirements, it calculates the usable coverage per sheet and determines the exact number of units to purchase. It prevents the common construction headache of stopping a pour due to being one sheet short.

Formulas

The calculator determines the Effective Area (Aeff) of a single sheet by subtracting the overlap strips from two sides (assuming a grid pattern).

Aeff = (Lsheet Loverlap) × (Wsheet Woverlap)

The total sheets required is the ceiling of the total project area divided by the effective area:

Nsheets = ceil(AtotalAeff)

Frequently Asked Questions

Standard overlap is typically required to be at least one full grid square plus the wire extensions. For a 200mm grid, a 300mm to 400mm overlap is common practice to ensure load transfer between sheets.
Sheets (e.g., A142, A393) are used for heavy structural loads and large flat areas. Rolls are generally lighter gauge wire and are used for anti-cracking in screeds or thinner toppings where structural strength is less critical.
It calculates 'Overlap Waste' which is the planned loss of coverage area. It does not calculate 'Cut Waste' (offcuts at the edges of irregular shapes), so it is recommended to add an additional 5-10% buffer for complex room shapes.
