About

Decision paralysis kills more vacations than budget constraints. Research shows the average traveler spends 23 hours comparing destinations before booking, often defaulting to familiar places. This generator uses weighted randomization across a curated dataset of 200+ global destinations, filtering by continent, climate zone, budget tier (scored 1 - 5 on a normalized cost-of-living index), and activity type. Each generated trip includes estimated daily costs derived from purchasing power parity data, not marketing averages.

The itinerary algorithm distributes n activities across d travel days using a density function that avoids over-scheduling (max 3 major activities per day) while respecting geographic clustering within the destination. Budget estimates assume mid-range accommodation and exclude international airfare, which varies by origin. Limitation: seasonal pricing fluctuations and visa requirements are not modeled. Treat outputs as structured inspiration, not a booking confirmation.

Formulas

The generator selects destinations using a weighted probability function. Each destination d in the filtered set D receives a weight w based on user preference alignment:

wd = α Bmatch + β Cmatch + γ Amatch

Where α = 0.4, β = 0.35, γ = 0.25 are weighting coefficients. Bmatch is the budget alignment score (0 - 1), Cmatch is the climate preference score, and Amatch is the activity overlap ratio.

The selection probability for destination d is then normalized:

P(d) = wd|D|i=1 wi

Total trip budget is estimated as:

Tcost = drate × ndays × kstyle

Where drate is the base daily cost in USD, ndays is trip duration, and kstyle is a travel style multiplier: 0.7 for budget, 1.0 for mid-range, 1.8 for luxury.

Frequently Asked Questions

Budget tiers range from 1 (under $40/day) to 5 (over $180/day). These figures represent mid-range accommodation, three meals, local transport, and one paid activity per day. They exclude international flights, travel insurance, and visa fees. Tier values are calibrated against purchasing power parity indices, not tourist-zone pricing alone.
The algorithm uses probabilistic weighted selection, not deterministic sorting. Destinations matching your filters are assigned weights based on alignment scores for budget (α = 0.4), climate (β = 0.35), and activities (γ = 0.25). A destination with 80% match can still be outdrawn by one with 60% match on any given run. This is intentional to promote discovery over repetition.
Cost data represents a snapshot normalized to USD at stable exchange rates. For countries with annual inflation exceeding 15% (e.g., Argentina, Turkey), actual costs may deviate by 20 - 40% from listed values. The travel style multiplier (kstyle) partially compensates: selecting "luxury" at 1.8× provides a buffer. Always verify current rates within 30 days of travel.
No. The generated itinerary assumes you are at the destination on Day 1. For trips requiring intercontinental flights (time zone difference exceeding 5 hours), add 1 - 2 buffer days manually. The activity density algorithm caps at 3 major activities per day but does not model fatigue accumulation across consecutive high-intensity days.
Each generated trip is assigned a random seed displayed on the trip card. Note this seed value. Entering the same seed with the same preferences will reproduce the identical trip, destination, itinerary, and budget breakdown. Seeds are 6-character alphanumeric codes stored in your browser's local storage alongside your trip history.
Each destination is tagged with its primary climate classification at the city/region level, not the country level. For example, selecting "Tropical" will surface Bali but not Tokyo, even though Japan has tropical southern islands. Destinations like Patagonia are classified as "Subpolar" despite Argentina containing tropical regions. The filtering granularity is city-level, not national.
