About

Selecting a vehicle from thousands of make-model-year combinations introduces decision paralysis. This generator assembles realistic car profiles by cross-referencing 45 manufacturers, 300+ models, and production year windows spanning 1960 - 2025. Each output validates engine-body compatibility: a 6.2L V8 will not appear in a subcompact, and a hybrid powertrain will not appear before its real-world introduction year. Estimated market price uses exponential depreciation from base MSRP with a decay constant k 0.15, which approximates the industry-standard 15% annual loss for the first five years.

The tool is useful for writers building fictional characters, game masters populating parking lots, dealership training exercises, or anyone who wants to break out of brand loyalty bias. Filters constrain the output space without eliminating surprise. Note: price estimates assume North American market conditions and do not account for regional taxes, collector premiums, or post-2023 inflation adjustments.

Formulas

Estimated current market price uses exponential depreciation from the manufacturer's suggested retail price:

Pcurrent = MSRP × ek t

where Pcurrent = estimated price today, MSRP = original manufacturer's suggested retail price, k = depreciation constant (0.15 for standard vehicles, 0.08 for trucks, 0.20 for luxury), and t = vehicle age in years (2025 year). A floor value of 8% of MSRP prevents prices from reaching implausible lows on classics.

Horsepower estimation from engine displacement uses the empirical relation:

HP D × Ctype

where D = displacement in liters and Ctype = coefficient per engine type: naturally aspirated 70, turbocharged 110, supercharged 100, diesel 55. Electric motors use direct kW × 1.341 conversion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Each body type has an allowed engine displacement range and engine type whitelist. A subcompact or hatchback restricts to 1.0 - 2.5L inline-4 or inline-3 engines. Trucks and SUVs permit V6 and V8 entries. Sports cars and supercars unlock high-displacement and forced-induction options. Electric powertrains are only assigned to models produced after 2010.
The exponential decay model (k 0.15) is a generalized approximation. Real depreciation varies by brand reputation, mileage, regional demand, accident history, and collector interest. A 1967 Mustang appreciates rather than depreciates. The tool applies an 8% MSRP floor to partially compensate, but does not model appreciation for classic or rare vehicles.
Yes. Use the Fuel Type filter and select Electric or Hybrid. The generator will constrain its pool to manufacturers and models that produce electrified powertrains, and will only assign production years from 2010 onward for hybrids and 2012 onward for full BEVs.
The tool uses the U.S. national average of 12,000 miles/year multiplied by vehicle age, then applies a random variance of ±20% to simulate real-world variation. Trucks receive a 1.15× multiplier. Sports cars receive a 0.7× multiplier, reflecting lower average annual mileage.
Yes. Manual transmissions are excluded from minivans and most post-2020 SUVs (reflecting market reality). CVTs are limited to naturally aspirated engines under 3.0L. DCT (dual-clutch) only appears on performance-oriented vehicles. Electric vehicles always receive a single-speed direct drive.
Color selection follows real-world automotive paint popularity data. White, black, gray, and silver collectively account for approximately 75% of weighted probability. Bold colors like red, blue, and green share the remaining 25%. This weighted distribution can be overridden by selecting a specific color in the filters.
