About
There are roughly 10,900 recognized bird species across 249 families. Identifying or learning them through sequential lists is impractical. This generator draws from a curated dataset spanning all major avian orders, weighted by taxonomic diversity, and returns a species with full classification (order, family, binomial name), biometric data (wingspan W, mass m), IUCN Red List status, geographic range, diet profile, and behavioral notes. Filters allow narrowing by continent, size class, or trophic level. The tool assumes current IUCN 2024 classifications. Conservation statuses shift; verify critical decisions against the IUCN API directly.
Each generated bird includes a procedurally rendered silhouette derived from morphometric ratios: body-to-tail proportion rbt, beak curvature index kb, and wing aspect ratio AR. These approximate the bird's general shape category (passerine, raptor, wader, waterfowl) but are not field-guide accurate. Pro tip: use the habitat and range data to cross-reference with your local birding checklist before a field trip.
Formulas
The generator uses a filtered uniform random selection. Given a filtered species pool of size N, each species has equal probability:
The procedural silhouette uses morphometric ratios to position BΓ©zier control points. The wing aspect ratio is computed as:
where W = wingspan and S = wing area. High AR values (albatross: 15+) produce long, narrow wing curves, while low values (partridge: 4 - 5) produce short, rounded shapes. The body-to-tail ratio rbt scales the tail bezier length relative to body ellipse major axis. Beak curvature kb ranges from 0 (straight, e.g. heron) to 1 (strongly curved, e.g. flamingo).
No-repeat logic uses Fisher-Yates on the index array, exhausting the pool before recycling:
