About
This is not a standard speed test. Speed tests measure bandwidth (how much data can fit in the pipe). This tool measures Latency (how fast the data travels) and Stability (how consistent the travel time is). In high-frequency trading, competitive gaming, and VoIP calls, bandwidth is secondary; latency is king.
We utilize the browser's Fetch API to measure the HTTP Round Trip Time (RTT) to over 100 global endpoints. Unlike command-line ICMP pings, this method reflects the actual application-layer performance of web protocols. We calculate critical metrics including Jitter (variance), Standard Deviation (consistency), and the Mean Opinion Score (MoS), a telecommunications standard for rating voice call quality.
Formulas
1. Jitter (RFC 3550): Calculated as the smoothed mean of differences between consecutive latencies.
2. Standard Deviation: A more robust measure of connection stability.
3. Estimated MoS (Mean Opinion Score): Derived from effective latency (Leff) which accounts for jitter and packet loss.
Where H is the Heaviside step function. The result R is then mapped to a 1-5 scale.
Reference Data
| Metric | Symbol | Good Range | Formula / Definition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Latency | L | 1 - 40 ms | Time taken for a packet to travel source → destination → source. |
| Jitter | J | < 15 ms | The average variation between consecutive latency measurements. High jitter causes rubber-banding. |
| Standard Deviation | σ | < 10 | Measures how spread out the latency values are from the mean. Lower is better. |
| MoS Score | M | 4.0 - 5.0 | Telecommunications standard (1-5) rating call quality derived from latency and packet loss. |
| Packet Loss | P | 0 % | Percentage of requests that failed to return within the timeout window. |
| p99 Latency | p99 | Contextual | The worst 1% of your pings. Reveals lag spikes that averages hide. |
