Ovarian Volume Calculator (Ellipsoid Formula)
Calculate ovarian volume from ultrasound dimensions. Includes checks for PCOS (Rotterdam criteria), asymmetry, and menopausal reference ranges.
About
Accurate assessment of ovarian volume is a cornerstone of gynecological diagnostics, particularly in the evaluation of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and Ovarian Reserve. Using the simplified ellipsoid formula, clinicians and patients can convert linear 2D ultrasound measurements into a 3D volumetric estimation.
This tool applies the standard coefficient 0.523. It automatically flags volumes exceeding the Rotterdam consensus threshold for PCOS (> 10 mL) and checks for significant asymmetry between left and right ovaries, which can be indicative of pathology such as cysts or tumors.
Formulas
The ovary is modeled as a prolate ellipsoid. The standard formula used in transvaginal or transabdominal ultrasonography is:
Where V is Volume in mL (cm3), and L, W, D are Length, Width, and Depth in cm.
Reference Data
| Status | Normal Volume Range (mL) | PCOS Warning Threshold |
|---|---|---|
| Reproductive Age | 4.0 − 9.8 | > 10.0 mL |
| Post-Menopausal | 1.2 − 5.8 | > 8.0 mL |
| Pre-Pubertal | 0.7 − 3.0 | N/A |
