Oil Volume (bbl) to Metric Tons Converter
Convert US Oil Barrels to Metric Tonnes using API Gravity or Crude Grade. Professional tool for energy sector logistics and trading calculations.
1. Input Volume
2. Density / Grade
About
In the global oil market, volume is traded in US Barrels (bbl), while shipping and logistics often measure cargo in Metric Tonnes (t). The conversion factor between these two units is not fixed; it is entirely dependent on the density of the crude oil. Lighter oils (high API) take up more volume per ton than heavy oils (low API).
This calculator implements the ASTM D1250 standard equations. It allows users to input the specific API Gravity or select from a database of common global crude blends (e.g., Brent, WTI, Dubai). The logic calculates the Specific Gravity (SG) first, then derives the mass, ensuring high precision for trading and freight estimation.
Formulas
The conversion requires deriving Specific Gravity from API Gravity, then applying the volume-to-mass relation. Note: 1 barrel is approximately 0.158987 cubic meters.
