About

Global trade relies on precise cost estimation. Importing goods involves more than just the product price; it triggers a cascade of tariffs, taxes, and fees known as the "Landed Cost". Failing to calculate this upfront often leads to shipments being held at customs or unexpected bills upon delivery.

This tool simplifies the complexity of the Harmonized System (HS). It estimates the duty payable based on product value, shipping, and insurance (CIF method). It also accounts for "De Minimis" values - thresholds under which no duty is charged - helping individual shoppers and businesses plan their logistics budgets accurately.

Formulas

The Total Landed Cost is the sum of the CIF value and all applicable taxes:

CIF = Value + Shipping + Insurance
Duty = CIF × Rateduty
Total = CIF + Duty + VAT

Note: Some countries calculate VAT on (CIF + Duty), effectively a tax on a tax.

Frequently Asked Questions

CIF (Cost, Insurance, Freight) means the seller pays costs until the destination port. FOB (Free on Board) means the buyer pays for shipping. Most customs duties are calculated on the CIF value.
It's a value threshold set by a country. If your imported goods are valued below this amount, no duty (and sometimes no tax) is collected. For example, the USA has a high threshold of $800.
HS Codes are 6-10 digit numbers classifying goods. You can search government tariff schedules or use the simplified category selector in this tool to approximate the rate.
No. Couriers (FedEx, DHL, UPS) often charge an extra "disbursement" or "brokerage" fee for processing the customs paperwork on your behalf. This is separate from the government tax.
