About

Aquarium hobbyists and pool contractors rely on precise volume calculations to manage water chemistry and structural load. A miscalculation in volume can lead to incorrect chemical dosing, potentially harming aquatic life or compromising sanitation. This tool bridges the gap between linear measurements and liquid capacity. It handles the conversion of dry dimensions into fluid volume, accounting for the geometric differences between rectangular tanks and cylindrical reservoirs. The focus is on providing a verifiable capacity metric for filtration sizing and heater selection.

Formulas

For rectangular containers, the volume is derived from the product of length, width, and height, scaled by 1000 if converting from cubic meters:

VL = (l × w × h)m × 1000

For cylindrical tanks, the area of the base is multiplied by height:

VL = π × r2 × h × 1000

Frequently Asked Questions

No. The calculator assumes internal dimensions. For aquarium safety, always measure the inside of the tank or subtract the glass thickness (usually 6mm to 12mm) from your external measurements to get the true water volume.
There are two types of gallons: US Gallons and UK (Imperial) Gallons. 1 US Gallon is approx 3.785 Liters, while 1 UK Gallon is approx 4.546 Liters. This tool outputs US Gallons by default but clearly labels them to avoid confusion.
Yes. Instead of inputting the total height of the tank, simply input the depth of the water level. The Length and Width (or Diameter) remain the same.
The tool accepts Diameter or Radius. Mathematically, Radius is simply Diameter divided by 2. Our cylinder mode allows you to input Diameter directly for convenience.
