About

This is not just a pixelator; it is a full-scale embroidery logic engine. While most free tools use simple RGB distance to match colors, this generator utilizes the CIELAB Color Space. This mimics how the human eye perceives color difference, ensuring that "Dark Red" matches with "Garnet" rather than a mathematically close but visually dull "Brown".

We have integrated the complete database of 480+ DMC Cotton Floss colors. The tool handles the mathematics of fabric coverage, calculating the exact amount of thread needed based on your specific Aida count and strand preference. It also features an "Anti-Confetti" engine to reduce single, isolated stitches that clutter your pattern and make stitching tedious.

Formulas

To ensure color accuracy, we calculate the ΔE (Delta E) distance between the pixel color and the thread color in the Lab color space. Standard RGB matching fails because it is not perceptually uniform.

ΔE = (L1 L2)2 + (a1 a2)2 + (b1 b2)2

To estimate the thread consumption L (in meters), we consider the stitch count N, fabric count C, and strand count s, adding a 15% waste buffer:

L = N × sC × 50 × 1.15

Frequently Asked Questions

In cross-stitch, "confetti" refers to single, isolated stitches of one color surrounded by other colors. They are difficult to stitch and require frequent tying off. Our "Smart Reduction" setting smooths these out by merging isolated pixels with their neighbors, creating a cleaner, more enjoyable stitching experience.
More colors mean higher photorealism but significantly higher cost and complexity. A project with 80 colors might cost $100 in thread and take months. A project with 20 colors is budget-friendly and faster. We recommend 30-50 colors for portraits.
Yes. The Skein Calculator adds a standard 15% buffer to account for starting, ending, and mistakes. It assumes a standard 8-meter DMC skein.
Absolutely. Once generated, switch to the "Symbol Chart" tab. This view is optimized for printing, replacing colors with unique high-contrast symbols that match the generated legend.
Skin tones are complex gradients. If the "Max Colors" setting is too low, the software is forced to use a single beige for the whole face. For portraits, increase "Max Colors" to at least 40 and enable "Dithering" to blend the transition between light and shadow.
