About

Nutritional requirements for children and adolescents differ fundamentally from adults. While adult calculations focus on weight maintenance or loss, pediatric logic must prioritize Energy Deposition - the additional calories required to build new bone and soft tissue. This tool utilizes the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Dietary Reference Intakes equations to calculate the Estimated Energy Requirement (EER). It incorporates specific coefficients for age, gender, and Physical Activity Level (PAL), ensuring that the result supports optimal growth velocities according to CDC reference charts.

Formulas

For boys aged 3-18, the EER formula is:

EER=88.5(61.9×A)+PA×(26.7×W+903×H)+20

For girls aged 3-18:

EER=135.3(30.8×A)+PA×(10.0×W+934×H)+20

Where A=Age, W=Weight(kg), H=Height(m), and PA is the Physical Activity coefficient.

Frequently Asked Questions

Caloric restriction for children should ONLY be done under the strict supervision of a pediatrician. Often, the goal for overweight children is "weight maintenance" while they grow in height, rather than weight loss. This calculator provides maintenance calories for growth; do not subtract calories without medical advice.
The formulas include a small caloric surplus (approx +20 to +25 kcal/day) specifically for tissue deposition. During peak growth spurts (puberty), appetite may naturally increase beyond these calculations. It is generally recommended to feed according to hunger cues during these windows.
