About

California's Golden State Stimulus II (GSS II), enacted through AB 141 in July 2021, distributed direct payments of 600 $ to eligible residents with adjusted gross income (AGI) below 75,000 $. Eligibility depends on filing status, whether you file with an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN), prior receipt of GSS I, and California Earned Income Tax Credit (CalEITC) qualification. An additional 500 $ supplement applies to filers claiming at least one dependent. Misunderstanding these layered conditions leads to incorrect expectations or missed claims during the filing window.

This calculator implements the exact qualification matrix published by the California Franchise Tax Board (FTB). It cross-checks your AGI against the 75,000 $ threshold, evaluates ITIN vs. SSN filing paths, and determines dependent supplement eligibility. Note: the tool approximates CalEITC eligibility using earned income ranges per filing status. Actual CalEITC qualification requires a full tax return analysis including investment income limits of 3,650 $ for the 2020 tax year.

Formulas

The GSS II payment is determined by a conditional qualification matrix rather than a continuous formula. The total payment P is computed as:

P = B + D

Where B is the base stimulus amount and D is the dependent supplement.

B = {
$600 if ITIN filer AGI $75,000$600 if SSN filer no GSS I AGI $75,000$0 if received GSS I$0 if AGI > $75,000
D = {
$500 if has 1 dependent AGI $75,000$0 otherwise

Where AGI = California Adjusted Gross Income from 2020 tax return (Form 540, line 17). B = base payment ($600 or $0). D = dependent supplement ($500 or $0). CalEITC eligibility requires earned income $30,000 and investment income $3,650 for the 2020 tax year.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you received GSS I (under SB 88), your GSS II base payment of $600 is reduced to $0. However, you may still qualify for the $500 dependent supplement if you claim at least one dependent and your AGI is at or below $75,000. This means prior GSS I recipients with dependents can still receive $500.
The AGI threshold is a hard cutoff at $75,000 on your 2020 California tax return (Form 540, line 17). There is no gradual phase-out. If your California AGI is $75,001, you receive $0. This differs from federal stimulus checks which used sliding scales.
ITIN filers who already received GSS I under the ITIN-specific provision are generally not eligible for the GSS II base payment, as the programs were designed to avoid duplicate $600 base payments. They may still qualify for the $500 dependent supplement if they have qualifying dependents.
CalEITC eligibility is one qualifying path for SSN filers. If you qualify for CalEITC (earned income $30,000, investment income $3,650, age 18+), you can receive GSS II even if you already received GSS I - but only the dependent supplement. If you did NOT receive GSS I, CalEITC qualification grants the full $600 base plus $500 dependent supplement.
A qualifying dependent is any person claimed as a dependent on your 2020 California tax return (Form 540). This includes children under 17, adult dependents, and qualifying relatives. You only need one dependent to receive the flat $500 supplement - having multiple dependents does not increase the amount beyond $500.
Filing status does not directly change the GSS II payment amount. All eligible filers receive the same $600 base regardless of status. However, filing status affects CalEITC eligibility thresholds and whether your AGI falls under the $75,000 limit. Married Filing Jointly couples receive one combined payment, not two separate ones.
