About

Estimating cake servings without a chart leads to either wasted cake or disappointed guests. The number of portions from a 10 round cake varies from 14 to 38 depending on whether you cut party-size or wedding-size slices. This calculator uses the Wilton/DecoPac industry serving standards where a party portion measures approximately 2 × 1 × 4 and a wedding portion is 1 × 2 × 4. It handles round, square, rectangular, and sheet cakes up to 5 tiers with separate dimensions per tier.

Note: actual yield depends on frosting thickness, fondant layer, and whether the top tier is preserved. Structural tiers (dummy/support) should be excluded. This tool assumes standard 4 cake height. For shorter layers, servings decrease proportionally. Pro tip: always round up by 10% for events. Guests take larger slices than you plan.

Formulas

For round cakes, the top-down area is computed as a circle, then divided by the cross-sectional area of each serving slice.

S = π r2Aportion

Where S = number of servings, r = cake radius in inches, Aportion = top-down area of one portion in in2. For party-size slices, Aportion = 2 in2 (2 × 1). For wedding-size slices, Aportion = 2 in2 (1 × 2). Both yield the same area, but wedding slices are thinner and taller from the side view.

For square and rectangular cakes:

S = L × Wwslice × dslice

Where L = length, W = width of the cake, wslice = width of each slice, dslice = depth of each slice. For multi-tier cakes, total servings equal the sum across all tiers:

Stotal = ni=1 Si

Where n = number of tiers and Si = servings from tier i. The height scaling factor adjusts servings when cake height deviates from the standard 4: fh = h4, where h is actual tier height in inches.

Frequently Asked Questions

Party-size portions are cut as wider slices approximately 2 wide at the outer edge, yielding fewer but more generous servings. Wedding-size portions are cut in a grid pattern from concentric rings, producing thinner 1 × 2 pieces. A 10 round cake yields roughly 28 party servings versus 38 wedding servings. Choose wedding style when cake is supplemented by other desserts.
Traditionally the top tier is preserved for a first anniversary and not served. This calculator includes a toggle to exclude any tier. If you plan to save the top tier, mark it as decorative. For a 3-tier cake with a 6 top, excluding it removes approximately 12 - 18 servings from the total.
Industry charts assume a standard 4 tall cake (two 2 layers). If your cake is 6 tall, each top-down slice contains 50% more cake volume. The calculator applies a height factor fh = h ÷ 4 to scale servings. A taller cake can be sliced thinner from above, increasing count.
Square cakes yield approximately 28% more servings than round cakes of the same nominal size because πr2 < (2r)2. A 12 square gives 72 party servings versus 40 for a 12 round. Sheet cakes push this further with minimal waste from edge trimming.
These numbers match Wilton and DecoPac professional charts within ±5%. Real-world variance comes from uneven cutting, frosting-heavy designs, and guest behavior. Dense cakes (mud cake, fruitcake) are typically cut smaller. Light sponge or angel food may require larger slices to feel substantial. Budget 10 - 15% extra for events.
Yes. Each tier is configured independently. A common wedding configuration uses a 14 round base, 10 square middle, and 6 round top. The calculator sums servings per tier regardless of shape. Ensure structural support is planned for mixed-shape stacking. Dowels and boards are critical when shapes change.
