About

Genealogical records, obituaries, and gravestones frequently list a death date alongside an age but omit the birth date. Reconstructing the exact date of birth from a death date and a stated age (in years, months, and days) requires calendar-aware subtraction that accounts for unequal month lengths and leap years. A naive subtraction of 365.25 × years days produces errors of up to ±2 days. This tool performs exact calendar arithmetic: it walks backward month-by-month from the death date, respecting each month's true length and February's leap-day rules. It also operates in forward mode, computing the precise lifespan between a known birth date and death date, decomposed into Y years, M months, and D days.

Results include total days lived, day of the week for both dates, Western zodiac sign, Chinese zodiac animal, and the percentage of a statistical average lifespan (72.6 years, WHO 2023 global figure) that was reached. Pro tip: historical records before the Gregorian calendar adoption (1582 in Catholic countries, 1752 in Britain) may use Julian dates. This tool assumes Gregorian throughout. Adjust old-style dates manually before input.

Formulas

Forward mode computes the exact calendar age between a birth date B and a death date D.

Age = Y years + M months + D days

Where Y, M, D are obtained by calendar subtraction: start at B, increment full years until exceeding D, then increment full months, then count remaining days. Total days lived:

T = Dms Bms86400000

where Dms and Bms are Unix timestamps in milliseconds. Reverse mode reconstructs birth date from death date and stated age:

B = D Y years M months D days

Leap year check for any year y:

(y mod 4 = 0 y mod 100 0) (y mod 400 = 0)

Percentage of average lifespan:

P = Ageyears72.6 × 100%

where 72.6 is the WHO 2023 global average life expectancy. Life path number (numerology): recursively sum all digits of the full birth date (DDMMYYYY) until a single digit 1 - 9 remains (master numbers 11, 22, 33 are preserved).

Frequently Asked Questions

The algorithm subtracts years first, then months, then days, respecting each month's actual length. If the death date is March 31 and you subtract 1 month, the result is February 28 (or 29 in a leap year), not an invalid February 31. This calendar-aware walk-back prevents impossible dates and matches how human age counting works.
Three common causes: (1) the age was recorded as "in their Nth year" rather than "N years completed", creating an off-by-one ambiguity; (2) the record uses Julian calendar dates (pre-1752 in Britain, pre-1582 in Catholic Europe) while this tool uses Gregorian; (3) the stated age rounded months/days. Always cross-reference with baptismal or civil registration records when available.
Yes. Total days are computed from the exact millisecond difference between the two UTC dates divided by 86,400,000. This inherently includes every leap day that falls within the lifespan. The year/month/day breakdown also checks February 29 validity at each step of the subtraction.
Life path number is a numerological concept. All digits of the birth date (DD + MM + YYYY) are summed repeatedly until a single digit remains. For example, January 15, 1990: 0+1+1+5+1+9+9+0 = 26 → 2+6 = 8. Master numbers 11, 22, and 33 are not reduced further. This is included as a cultural reference point, not a scientific metric.
It uses the WHO 2023 global average of 72.6 years. This is a population-level statistic that varies significantly by country (53.9 in Nigeria vs 84.8 in Japan), sex, era, and socioeconomic factors. For historical figures born before 1900, the global average was closer to 30-45 years, making the percentage less meaningful without era-specific adjustment.
The tool assumes proleptic Gregorian calendar for all dates. For dates before local Gregorian adoption (1582 Catholic Europe, 1752 Britain, 1918 Russia), you must manually convert Old Style (Julian) dates to New Style (Gregorian) before input. The offset varies: +10 days for 1582-1699, +11 for 1700-1799, +12 for 1800-1899, +13 for 1900+.
