It assumes the belt is measured from the fold or buckle pin to the center hole. Results approximate; leather stretches 0.5 - 1 in over time, and braided or elastic belts follow different tolerances.

The standard belt sizing formula adds a fixed offset to the measured waist circumference to account for belt overlap past the buckle pin to the center hole:

Where B = belt size in inches, W = true waist measurement in inches at the belt-wearing point. For metric input, the waist is first converted:

Fit preference applies a secondary offset f:

B_adj = W + 2 + f

Where f = −1 for tight, 0 for standard, +1 for loose fit. EU sizing converts inches to the nearest 5 cm increment: B_EU = round(B_adj × 2.54 ÷ 5) × 5. Italian numeral sizing maps to EU ranges in groups of 10 cm.

The extra 2 inches (5 cm) accounts for the belt length from the buckle pin (or fold) to the center hole. A belt is measured along its full strap length, not just the portion wrapping your waist. The center hole (third of five) sits roughly 2 in past your actual waist circumference point. Using the center hole gives you adjustment room in both directions.

Always prefer a direct tape measurement around your torso at the point where you wear your belt. Pant tag sizes are nominal and vary by brand, cut, and rise. A tagged size-32 pant can have a true waist of 33 - 34 in due to vanity sizing. If you must use pant size, this calculator applies the +2 rule to the tag number, which is the industry convention, but accuracy drops.

Full-grain leather belts stretch 0.5 - 1 in over their first year of regular wear. If you are between two sizes, choose the smaller one for a leather belt. Synthetic, bonded leather, or fabric belts stretch minimally; for those, go with the exact calculated size or one size up.

Width does not change the length sizing, but wider belts (over 1.5 in) may feel tighter because they distribute less flex and cover more torso surface. Italian brands use Roman numerals (I through VIII+) that each span a 10 cm EU range. Size I covers EU 70 - 75, size II covers 80 - 85, and so on, incrementing by 10 cm per numeral. Because each numeral spans two EU sizes, Italian sizing is less precise. When you fall near a boundary, try both adjacent numerals.
