About

Selecting a mattress without measuring guarantees one of two failures: a bed that cramps movement during sleep or one that blocks dresser drawers and closet doors. The clearance between a bed frame and the nearest wall must be at least 24in (61cm) for passage and 36in (91cm) for comfortable daily use. This calculator cross-references your room dimensions Lroom × Wroom, the number of sleepers, each sleeper's height h, and sleeping position preference against a database of 12 standard mattress sizes from US, UK, and EU markets. It computes a weighted comfort score S that penalizes insufficient length, inadequate per-sleeper width, and tight room clearances. The output is a ranked recommendation, not a guess.

Limitations: this tool assumes a rectangular room and does not account for angled walls, bay windows, or radiator placement. Frame overhang (typically 2 - 4in beyond mattress dimensions) is included as a configurable buffer. Pro tip: measure from baseboard to baseboard, not wall to wall, since baseboards can steal 0.5 - 1.5in per side.

Formulas

The calculator computes a composite comfort score S for each candidate bed size. Four sub-scores are evaluated on a 0 - 100 scale and combined with empirical weights:

S = 0.30 Swidth + 0.25 Slength + 0.25 Sclearance + 0.20 Sratio

Where:

Swidth measures per-sleeper width against a target of 30in (76cm) per person:

Swidth = min(100, Wbedn × 30 × 100)

Slength ensures the mattress exceeds the tallest sleeper's height by at least 10in:

Slength = min(100, Lbedhmax + 10 × 100)

Sclearance evaluates minimum walkway space around the bed. The effective clearance is the smallest gap on any accessible side, compared against the 24in minimum:

Sclearance = min(100, Cmin24 × 100)

Sratio checks whether the bed consumes a reasonable share of floor area. The ideal range is 25 - 35% of room area:

R = Wbed × LbedWroom × Lroom

Where Wbed = mattress width + frame buffer, Lbed = mattress length + frame buffer, n = number of sleepers, hmax = tallest sleeper height, Cmin = minimum clearance on any accessible side, and R = bed-to-room area ratio. A score below 50 flags the size as unsuitable. Scores above 80 indicate an excellent fit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most bed frames extend 2 - 4in beyond the mattress on each side. This calculator adds a configurable frame buffer (default 2in per side) to the mattress dimensions before computing room clearance. A platform frame with no overhang can use 0in, while ornate sleigh beds may require 4in or more. Ignoring frame overhang can reduce your effective walkway by 4 - 8in total, potentially dropping below the 24in ergonomic minimum.
Sleep ergonomics research recommends the mattress exceed your height by at least 10in (25cm). This accounts for pillow placement (typically 6 - 8in) and natural stretching during sleep. A sleeper who is 72in (6ft) tall needs a mattress at least 82in long, which rules out standard 75in models and points toward XL or California King lengths.
A US King mattress measures 76 × 80in. Adding 2in frame buffer per side gives 80 × 84in. With 24in clearance on three accessible sides (two long sides plus foot), the minimum room width is 80 + 24 + 24 = 128in (10.7ft) and minimum length is 84 + 24 = 108in (9ft) assuming the headboard is against a wall. That translates to roughly 10.7 × 9ft minimum.
Side sleepers curl inward and typically occupy 22 - 26in of width. Back sleepers with arms at their sides use about 24 - 28in. Stomach and spread-out sleepers can consume 30 - 36in. The calculator adjusts the per-sleeper target width based on the selected position, which directly impacts Swidth. Two spread-out sleepers need a minimum 60in mattress (Queen) and ideally 72 - 76in (King).
Interior design standards recommend the bed occupy 25 - 35% of bedroom floor area. Below 25%, the room feels empty and the bed undersized. Above 40%, nightstands, dressers, and a clear path to closets become problematic. The Sratio component penalizes sizes that push above 40%, ensuring space remains for essential bedroom furniture.
A UK King measures 60 × 78in, which is closer to a US Queen (60 × 80in). EU sizes use metric-round dimensions (e.g., 160 × 200cm). Ordering across regions without converting can result in sheets that do not fit and frames that are too wide. This calculator includes region-specific sizes so you can compare directly.
