About

A day at the beach carries hidden costs that compound fast. Between sunbed rental, umbrella hire, a cold beer, bottled water, a beachside meal, ice cream, sunscreen, and parking, the total daily expenditure can range from €15 in Albania to over €120 in Saint-Tropez. This calculator aggregates real average prices across 8 cost categories for 50+ beach destinations worldwide. It computes a composite Beach Price Index (BPI) that expresses each destination's cost as a percentage deviation from the global median. A BPI of 0 means average cost. A BPI of +50 means 50% more expensive than the median beach.

The tool assumes a single adult spending one full day at the beach. Prices reflect peak season (June - August) averages and do not include transport to the destination or accommodation. Pro tip: shoulder season (May, September) typically reduces these costs by 20 - 40% at Mediterranean destinations. Currency conversion uses fixed reference rates against the Euro. Actual costs vary by exact beach location, day of week, and vendor.

Formulas

The Beach Price Index (BPI) quantifies how expensive a destination is relative to the global median daily beach cost. The daily cost is the arithmetic sum of all 8 individual expense categories.

Ctotal = Csunbed + Cumbrella + Cbeer + Cwater + Cmeal + Cice cream + Csunscreen + Cparking

The Beach Price Index is then computed as the percentage deviation from the global median:

BPI = Ctotal βˆ’ MM Γ— 100

Where Ctotal = total daily cost at the destination, and M = median daily cost across all destinations in the dataset. A BPI of 0 indicates median cost. Positive values indicate above-median expense. For multi-day trips, the total vacation beach cost is:

Cvacation = Ctotal Γ— D

Where D = number of beach days. The comparison savings between two destinations A and B over D days:

S = (CA βˆ’ CB) Γ— D

Frequently Asked Questions

The BPI is calculated as the percentage deviation of a destination's total daily beach cost from the global median cost across all destinations in the dataset. A BPI of βˆ’30 means the destination is 30% cheaper than the median beach. The formula is BPI = ((Ctotal βˆ’ M) Γ· M) Γ— 100. Destinations with free sunbeds (public beaches like Bondi or Malibu) will score lower on infrastructure costs but may have higher food and parking costs.
Many popular beaches operate as public spaces where sunbed and umbrella rental services do not exist or are uncommon. Examples include most Australian beaches (Bondi), many US West Coast beaches (Malibu), and some island destinations (Maldives resorts include them in room rate, Seychelles beaches are public). The calculator sets these to €0.00 to reflect that these are not separate costs at those locations. This does not mean the destination is cheap overall.
Prices represent peak season (June through August for Northern Hemisphere, December through February for Southern Hemisphere) averages based on aggregated travel survey data. Actual prices vary by exact beach within a destination, day of week, and specific vendor. Shoulder season travel (May, September for Mediterranean) typically reduces costs by 20 to 40%. The data is most accurate for established tourist beaches and less precise for remote or newly popular destinations.
The calculator uses fixed reference exchange rates against the Euro (€) for standardized comparison. All prices are stored and displayed in Euros. For destinations outside the Eurozone (USA, Thailand, Brazil, etc.), the original local prices were converted at reference rates. Real-time currency fluctuations can shift actual costs by 5 to 15% in either direction. Always check current exchange rates before finalizing travel budgets.
The 8 categories represent a single adult's typical beach day expenditure. For couples, double the per-person items (beer, water, meal, ice cream) but keep sunbed, umbrella, and parking as shared or slightly increased. For families with children, multiply food items by headcount and add 10 to 20% for incidentals. The sunscreen cost assumes one application of a standard 200ml bottle spread across the trip. If buying locally at tourist markup, budget 30 to 50% more than home prices.
Yes. The Custom Destination feature allows you to enter your own prices for all 8 categories. This is useful if you have first-hand knowledge of a specific beach or want to model a destination not in the default dataset. The calculator will compute the BPI and ranking for your custom entry against all other destinations, giving you a precise comparison.
