About

BaZi (Eight Characters) is a sophisticated system of Chinese metaphysics that maps a person's birth time to the Sexagenary cycle of 60 Stem-Branch combinations. Unlike Western astrology which focuses on star positions, BaZi focuses on the flow of 'Qi' (energy) through the Five Elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) at the precise moment of birth.

This calculator performs the complex conversion from the Gregorian calendar to the Solar Chinese calendar. It accounts for the crucial Solar Terms (Jie Qi), which define the true astrological months, rather than the Lunar months used in festivals. Use this to discover your Day Master and elemental structure.

Formulas

The calculation relies on the Modulo-60 cycle. A simplified logic for the Year Pillar:

StemIndex = (Year 4) mod 10
BranchIndex = (Year 4) mod 12

The Month Pillar is derived using the 'Five Tigers' method based on the Year Stem. The Day Pillar requires counting total days from a reference epoch (e.g., Jan 1, 1900).

Frequently Asked Questions

BaZi uses the Solar Calendar, where the year always begins on 'Li Chun' (Start of Spring), usually around February 4th. The Lunar New Year (festive) can range from late January to mid-February, but it does not affect the BaZi Year pillar.
The Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of your Day Pillar. It represents 'You' in the chart. All other elements are interpreted based on their relationship (supporting, draining, or controlling) to this Day Master.
The hour determines the fourth pillar, which represents your children, your old age, and your inner thoughts. Without it, the chart is only 75% complete.
