Average US households spent $890.07 per child on back-to-school supplies in 2024 according to the National Retail Federation. Miscalculating that figure across multiple children compounds quickly. This calculator uses grade-level supply lists derived from common school district requirements and average retail pricing to produce an itemized cost estimate. You set quantities, override default prices, apply your local sales tax rate t, and multiply across n children. The output is a printable checklist suitable for in-store use. Tool assumes US retail averages and does not account for bulk discounts or brand premiums. Adjust unit prices to match your local market.
Formulas
The total back-to-school cost C is computed as the sum of all item subtotals, scaled by the number of children and adjusted for sales tax.
Where n = number of children, t = sales tax rate as a decimal (e.g., 0.07 for 7%), k = total number of supply items, qi = quantity of item i, and pi = unit price of item i.
Budget variance is calculated as:
Where B = target budget. A positive ΔB means under budget. A negative value signals overspend.
