About

New Jersey Geological Survey (NJGS) atlas sheets partition the state into a grid of 7.5-minute USGS topographic quadrangles. Each sheet maps to a precise bounding box defined by corner coordinates in decimal degrees. Field workers, environmental consultants, and permit applicants routinely reference these sheet numbers, yet a single transposition error when converting to latitude/longitude can mislocate a site by kilometers. This tool performs exact bidirectional conversion between atlas sheet identifiers, decimal degrees (°), and degrees-minutes-seconds (DMS) notation. It covers all 200+ quadrangles tiling New Jersey from sheet 1 (High Point) to sheet 230 (Cape May Point).

The underlying grid follows USGS 7.5′ series conventions: each sheet spans 7.5′ of longitude and 7.5′ of latitude. Conversion from DMS to decimal uses the identity DD = D + M60 + S3600. Note: this tool assumes NAD83 datum alignment consistent with current NJGS publications. Coordinates falling outside New Jersey’s bounding box (38.9°N - 41.4°N, 73.9°W - 75.6°W) will not resolve to a valid sheet.

Formulas

Conversion between Degrees-Minutes-Seconds and decimal degrees uses the following identity:

DD = D + M60 + S3600

Where DD = decimal degrees, D = whole degrees, M = arc-minutes (0 - 59), and S = arc-seconds (0 - 59.999).

The inverse conversion extracts components:

D = floor(DD)
M = floor((DD D) × 60)
S = (DD D M60) × 3600

Atlas sheet identification uses a containment test. A coordinate (lat, lon) falls within sheet n if:

latSW lat < latNE and lonNE lon < lonSW

Where the subscripts denote the southwest and northeast corner coordinates of the sheet bounding box. Each USGS 7.5′ quadrangle spans 0.125° in both latitude and longitude.

All coordinates are referenced to NAD83, consistent with current NJGS publications and USGS 7.5-minute topographic quadrangle series. If your source data uses NAD27, expect horizontal offsets of 10-30 meters depending on location within New Jersey. Apply an appropriate datum transformation before using this tool.
The atlas sheet grid covers only quadrangles that intersect New Jersey's land area and immediate coastal zone. Coordinates in open ocean east of the barrier islands, or in border areas where the quadrangle is named after a Pennsylvania or New York locality, may not appear in the lookup table. Verify your longitude sign convention: west longitudes should be entered as positive values (the tool assumes west).
The center point is computed as the arithmetic mean of the SW and NE corner coordinates. This places it within ±0.0625° (approximately ±6.9 km) of any point on the sheet. For site-specific work, you should use the bounding box corners and interpolate to your position within the sheet.
Points exactly on a boundary edge satisfy the containment test for only one sheet due to the half-open interval convention (SW inclusive, NE exclusive). In practice, USGS quadrangles do not overlap. However, if you are working with a printed map that shows collar overlap for cartographic reasons, the actual data extent is strictly one sheet per point.
NJGS atlas sheet numbers are a state-specific sequential index assigned for administrative convenience. They map one-to-one to named USGS 7.5-minute quadrangles but the numbering is not standardized nationally. Sheet 1 corresponds to the High Point quadrangle in the northwest corner of New Jersey, and numbers generally increase southward and eastward.
Enter seconds with up to four decimal places (e.g., 45.3927). The formula DD = D + M/60 + S/3600 preserves all input precision through IEEE 754 double-precision floating point, which provides approximately 15 significant digits - more than sufficient for sub-meter geographic accuracy.
