About

Every zodiac sign belongs to one of three modalities: Cardinal, Fixed, or Mutable. These modalities describe how energy is expressed. Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) initiate action. Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) sustain effort. Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) adapt and transition. A chart dominated by one modality creates predictable behavioral patterns. Ignoring modality distribution leads to incomplete chart readings.

This calculator uses weighted planetary scoring. Not all celestial bodies contribute equally. The Sun and Moon carry a weight of 4, while outer planets like Uranus and Neptune carry 1. The tool assumes a standard 11-body chart (including Ascendant). Results approximate tendencies based on sign placement only. House positions and aspects are not factored.

Formulas

The modality score for each quality is derived by summing the weights of all planets placed in signs of that modality:

Sm = ni=1 wi δ(signi, m)

where δ(signi, m) = 1 if the sign of planet i belongs to modality m, else 0.

The percentage for each modality is then:

Pm = SmSCardinal + SFixed + SMutable × 100%

Standard weights: Sun = 4, Moon = 4, Ascendant = 3, Mercury = 2, Venus = 2, Mars = 2, Jupiter = 1.5, Saturn = 1.5, Uranus = 1, Neptune = 1, Pluto = 1. Total possible weight W = 22.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Sun and Moon (luminaries) represent core identity and emotional nature respectively. They color daily behavior far more than generational planets like Uranus, Neptune, or Pluto, which remain in a single sign for 7-20 years. The weighting system (Sun = 4, Moon = 4, Ascendant = 3) reflects this differential influence as practiced in traditional and modern astrological chart delineation.
A modality exceeding 50% of total weight suggests a pronounced behavioral pattern. Cardinal dominance (above 50%) correlates with initiative-taking but potential difficulty sustaining projects. Fixed dominance indicates persistence but resistance to change. Mutable dominance suggests adaptability but potential inconsistency. A balanced chart (each modality between 25% - 40%) indicates versatility.
The Ascendant (Rising Sign) carries a weight of 3 in this calculator. If your birth time is unknown, your Ascendant is unreliable. Set it to "Not selected" to exclude it. The calculator will recalculate percentages based on the remaining bodies. Note that excluding the Ascendant removes 3 out of 22 total weight points (approximately 13.6%), which can shift modality percentages noticeably.
Element balance groups signs by Fire, Earth, Air, and Water (4 groups of 3 signs each). Modality balance groups signs by Cardinal, Fixed, and Mutable (3 groups of 4 signs each). The two systems are orthogonal. For example, Aries is both Cardinal and Fire. A complete chart analysis requires evaluating both distributions independently.
Yes. The Sun sign contributes only 4 out of 22 possible weight points. Two individuals born under Leo (Fixed) could have vastly different modality distributions depending on where their Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, and other bodies fall. A Leo with Moon in Aries, Mercury in Cancer, and Venus in Virgo would show a much more Cardinal/Mutable profile than a Leo with Moon in Taurus and Mercury in Leo.
A completely absent modality is rare but significant in astrological interpretation. Zero Cardinal weight suggests difficulty initiating new ventures. Zero Fixed weight implies challenges with follow-through and stability. Zero Mutable weight indicates rigidity and poor adaptation to changing circumstances. In practice, having even one planet (weight ≥ 1) in a modality prevents a true zero.
