Nameplate wattage is the maximum rated draw under peak load conditions. Actual running wattage is typically 40 - 80% of nameplate for motor-driven appliances. A refrigerator rated at 250 W may average only 150 W due to compressor cycling. For best accuracy, use a plug-in power meter (Kill-A-Watt) to measure actual consumption over 24 hours. Phantom load is power consumed by devices in standby or off mode - chargers left plugged in, TVs on standby, smart speakers.
